Three Months Later, Is Ruger Still The Best New Artist Of 2021?

0

Earlier this year when Ruger came, it was obvious he was going to be one of the fresh new voices 2021 was gonna offer us.

How big of a sensation he was going to become though. Nobody really knew. Maybe it doesn’t matter.

But Ruger is signed to Jonzing World, the same imprint owned by Don Jazzy‘s brother, D’Prince. That same Jonzing World that gave us Rema.

It was only right that people at least gave him that first dose of attention. As with everyone, nobody knew how long it was gonna last. Will he still be here next year? And the year after? Who knows.

What we do know is that it has been well over three months since Ruger dropped his acclaimed “Pandemic” EP, and it’s still a rave.

I suppose it can be said that it’s still on top because not a lot of materials have dropped since his release.

Yes, it can be said, but it wouldn’t be accurate. Because there’s been a lot of music out here. They’re just not up to standard. The music out cannot win, put side by side with Ruger’s stuff.

The ‘Ruger sound’ — as I’m calling it from now on — is not new at all. He’s got a distinctive voice, but the style he’s doing is nothing we don’t know.

He’s just building on sound we have, the afro-fusion sound that has been around for quite a while.

Adding his own unique voice, his sonic pattern, his rhyme scheme and every other sauce he’s got, he’s making something truly magical with his music.

His EP is different from what we’ve got in the past, really. Different from “Rema” or “Bad Commando” or “Oxygene” or “Razor.”

The sound is fresh, and hot. Also, can’t be jumbled up with the load of crap that’s hot on the streets at the moment.

While it all sounds good, Ruger should not necessarily be able to survive the cluster and rise above the over-saturation.

Ordinarily, no. But, Ruger is special. You can hear it in his voice. So the standing out would not be a problem for him.

And when that’s out of the way, what do you expect?

Ruger is the best new artist of 2021 so far, and I expect it to remain that way. Because, listen to the guy now, how can anyone touch that? Really?
