In pursuit of new inspiration, Nigerian music creatives are open to a wide range of possibilities and we can bet that’s where new sounds are birthed.
At the successful attempt of a new sound, it goes on to become a trend in the music sphere when different other singers and music makers try their hands on it too.
Listeners’ psychology has also been tuned to welcome this newness and hop on the bandwagon each time.
The most unique sound element adopted in the year 2020 was the Amapiano sound, a South African style of house music that emerged in 2012.
Amapiano is characterized by wide basslines and distinguished by high pitched piano melodies.
This South African sound gained popularity all over the African continent in the year 2020 with an evident increase in digital streams and music charts.
While this happened in the realm of African music, you would put your money on it that Nigerian artists will never be left out in the trend.
Let’s look at a few of our artists who have attempted the Amapiano sound and see what they came up with:
Falz ft Niniola – Squander
The best thing to happen on this track was featuring the queen of house music herself, Niniola.
She retains that image in the Nigerian music industry for as long as no other female singer has been bold enough to explore the house music style.
Niniola has shown excellent workings in her house music discography over the years, apparently, Amapiano will not be strange for her to attempt, only that Falz was a step ahead to feature her.
The track Squander is a typical representative of Amapiano sound from Nigeria as Falz’s use of diverse Nigerian dialects including Hausa, Igbo, and Yoruba with another African dialect from Kenya makes the song very rich in quality.
It will definitely earn a distinction if rated from the real source of the sound in South Africa.
Dremo ft Mayorkun – E Be Tins
This is clearly the effort of two musical geniuses, Dremo and Mayorkun who do not hide that they enjoy trying out new things in their craft.
Their joint input with that of their all-time producer, Fresh VDM on ‘He Be Tins’ resulted in an irresistible Amapiano sound.
Ayanfe ft. Mayorkun – What’s Going On
New Obama/Davido Music Worldwide signee, Ayanfe doubled with Mayorkun (again) to deliver spicy Amapiano music.
This is another track with a borrowed African dialect that makes it appealing to more than just the Nigerian audience.
The intention behind Nigerian artists creating Amapiano music obviously goes beyond the desire to make us dance.
The idea is to transit their contents beyond the shores of the homeland to other African nations, thus making an impact in the global music scene
.
Zinoleesky – Kilofeshe
Kilofeshe by Zinoleesky was part of his recently released EP compilation, a track to prove how versatile he is in the music industry.
It is regarded quite courageous of Zino to jump on an Amapiano beat in 2020 when barely many artists in the higher hierarchy have attempted it.
Retaining Zino’s original sound on an entirely foreign beat goes to show how much he is willing to perform and what to expect from him.
Small Doctor – Mandeman
One can only be familiar enough with Nigerian music to know how swiftly Small Doctor jumps on trends.
Small Doctor also caught the Amapiano bug and played around with the recently updated contemporary slangs on Mandeman.
