Since October 8 till this very moment, millions of concerned Nigerians (youth) all over the 36 States of the federation, in diaspora, demanding for the indefinite disbandment of the dreaded Anti-Robbery Squad SARS.
What Is #EndSARS All About?
End SARS is a decentralised social movement and series of mass protests against police harassment and brutality in Nigeria. The slogan calls for the disbanding of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, a notorious unit of the Nigerian Police with a long record of abuses.
And it was a success at the end. The federal government disbanded SARS, set up Judicial Panel of Inquiry and Restitution to investigate cases of past and present police brutality in the country.
But some individuals are not okay with that. They insisted that the ENDSARS protest must continue. Yesterday the 1st November 2020, some soldiers harass Sowore and his followers as they scribble #EndSARS graffiti at Abuja airport road.
That’s bad of the military, but why would Sowore continue with the ENDSARS protest? Why not go with REVOLUTION NOW slogan? Why is he trying to jeopardize the efforts of millions of Nigerian youths for the past few weeks on the streets?
Yesterday, President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja appealed to Nigerian youths to end street protests and participate in meaningful discussions with government aimed at comprehensive reforms to end all forms of police brutality against Nigerians.
He said this during the National Youth Day celebration, observed on 1st November 2020, coinciding with the African Youth Day celebration.
He said,
”You must realize that protests cannot last indefinitely. My government will not lift a hand to stop or suppress you.
”However, the fact of the matter is that other forces and actors will seek to take over your protests that they may redirect them in ways you did not intend and perhaps do not agree with.
”Every successful protest movement the world over has understood that there comes a time when activity must move from the street to the negotiation table. That time for you has come. Do not be afraid of this reality. You should welcome it.
”It is important that we all strive to use this moment constructively. Too many people have already sacrificed too dearly. It is our duty to use this fateful situation to move ourselves to a more just and caring society.
”As youth, you have a nation and a future to build. My government will always be your faithful partner in this essential and patriotic endeavour,”.
Personally, I don’t trust or believe the FG or any speech from lying, deceitful President Buhari, but at this point, we have to give him a little time. Maybe from now till January 2021. We’ve listed what we wanted (our demands), so I think we should end the street protest for now.
SARS is ended already. Going about the streets protesting with same #EndSars placards, graffiti, makes no sense. Infact, it makes us look, sound stupid and confused.
I know this protest is beyond ending SARS, but REVOLUTION in disguise. In that case, let’s come out straight up with the #EndBadGovernance hashtag(slogan) instead #EndSARS.
In my opinion,
Nigerian Youth Should End Street Protest, Engage In Peaceful Dialogue With FG -DO YOU AGREE?
